Kahn, Phyllis L. (Princeton University, Princeton, N.J.), and Donald R. Helinski. Relationship between colicinogenic factors E(1) and V and an F factor in Escherichia coli. J. Bacteriol. 88:1573-1579. 1964.-Colicinogenic factors are the genetic determinants for colicin production in enteric bacteria. An examination of the relationship of two colicinogenic factors, colE(1) and colV, to the F factor of fertility in Escherichia coli revealed that the colE(1) factor does not have the properties of a fertility factor, whereas the colV factor appears to possess a genetic determinant of fertility (F(v)). Cells containing colE(1) alone do not recombine with F(-) strains, whereas V(+)F(v) (+) strains can recombine, but at a lower frequency for certain markers than cells containing the F factor from E. coli. Strains possessing the colV factor can transfer the V(+) and F(v) (+) properties to an F(-) recipient, whereas strains harboring colE(1) alone are not able to transfer this factor. When a V(+)F(v) (+)E(1) (+) strain is used as a donor, recipients show F(v) (+) sexuality characteristics only if they also acquire the ability to produce colicin V. The colV factor is transferred at lower efficiency to F(+) than to F(-) strains, whereas the transfer of colE(1) is equally efficient to both. In addition, the V(+)F(v) (+)F(+) colonies isolated segregate V(+)F(v) (+)F(-) and V(-)F(v) (-)F(+) cells at high frequency, indicating an incompatibility between the colV and F factors. Finally, under the conditions employed, acridine orange does not remove the colE(1) factor, but will remove the colV factor from colicinogenic cells. In every case tested, the V(+) and F(v) (+) characteristics are removed simultaneously by the acridine orange treatment.

Isolation of minicircular deoxyribonucleic acids from wild strains of Escherichia coli and their relationship to other bacterial plasmids.

Supercoiled minicircular deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecules with molecular weights of 1.8 x 10(6) and 2.3 x 10(6) have been isolated from two wild strains of Escherichia coli. DNA-DNA hybridization experiments indicate that these DNA molecules share extended homologies with the minicircular DNA of E. coli 15. The DNA of the colicinogenic factor E1 (ColE1) also hybridizes to a large extent wi...

Interactions between Colicinogenic Factor B and F-Type Factors: Isolation of a Mutant F-lac Factor Insensitive to the Effect of Colicinogenic Factor B.

An extrachromosomal factor, colicinogenic factor B (colB) inhibits expression of fertility functions of various F-type factors in strains of E. coli K12. Mutant F-lac factors simultaneously became insensitive to all the effects of colB as well as to similar actions exerted by a resistance transfer factor, R fi(+). This suggests that a common site or activity necessary for the expression of seve...

Association between colicinogenic and fertility factors.

OLICINOGENIC factors (col factors) are transferred among different Hfr cor F+ and Fstrains of Escherichia coli K-12 as extrachromosomal particles (FREDERICQ and BETZ-BAREAU 1953; NAGEL DE ZWAIG, A N T ~ N , and PUIG 1962; CLOWES 1963). While some factors, like colE, and colE,, do not affect the fertility of donor strains, others, for example colB or colI, have been reported either to cause fert...

Colicinogeny of Escherichia coli MRE 600.

Escherichia coli MRE 600 is a colicinogenic bacterium. Its colicinogenic activity may be ascribed mostly to colicin E1, although it produces a small amount of another, as yet unidentified, colicin.
